Taxi prices in Accra have soared in recent years, but first-time drivers and families still pay a lot. When I was in Pakistan I was going to higher cost places and now people want the cheapest ride. They expect the taxi to drive with them to the proper place. Still people may be lucky to find a low-cost taxi these days. Since most travelling times in Accra are between 7.00 am and 3.00 pm, most locals do not spend hours each day commuting to the capital and staying overnight. Uber & its mobile app taking over one in every three taxi drivers and business owners in a city where, even before this, for drivers, a lira (50 cents) can often seem quite cheap. Taxi drivers are preparing for a possible strike, with drivers on strike in various parts of the country.
