Taxi prices in Bedford had risen 27% since last year as potential customers became wary of black cab drivers. The survey of almost 3,000 taxi drivers found that black cabs made up the vast majority of vehicles registered in town and that far fewer vehicles were black cabs than suspected. The West of England has a higher rate of black cabs than the rest of the country and the number of operators with such vehicles rose from only eight in 2004 to 27 last year.
