"In Berlin, we find that we can help only more people when we offer more options," said Jean-François Périn, a 37-year-old founder of the "Museu Uber" in the fashionable "Gärtner Wollensak" district, where the New Yorker once lived. "There is a 'pre-taxi' demand that we can meet because the numbers are there."
Some 70 taxi drivers have applied to his company and more than 60 former cabdrivers have become "partners," he said.
The "Uber-Taxi" has filled seven existing taxi standing orders in Berlin, Périn said. About a dozen full-time drivers also already follow the Uber name. "I want to play a part in developing the market," he said.

Taxi prices in Berlin range from around the €12 per kilometre mark to around the €30 mark. The low end is around €10/km, and the average price per kilometre is around €12. Most other taxis have a fixed fare between €10/km and €15/km. The ultimate price difference is going to be made up by the fee for cell-phone calls, which can cost between €0.60 and €1.30/km. The price for calling can fluctuate greatly and most travel companies do not offer cellular phone calls.
