What we did

We used a variety of different metrics to understand where Uber was performing well in Boston. We found the following:

Uber performed strongly in the lower quartile of taxi ridership

Uber did well in the inner city neighborhoods

Uber performed poorly in a residential area of South Boston

Uber had the greatest presence in South Boston, where they were the second most popular service after Lyft

What we think

Uber performed well in Boston. In our survey of Boston taxi ridership, the average cost for a taxi ride with Uber in the city of Boston was $11.55. We compared this to the cost of a taxi ride in Boston from the same location with a traditional cab service, such as a Yellow Cab

Boston taxi drivers should be visible, which is part of a group of best practices for covering a person's face in the passenger compartment of a car, said Susan Bass, director of transit safety and performance at the American Public Transportation Association. She said many passengers tend to be "tense," and their reactions are often seen as anti-public transit. It's not just about getting people to open their mouth, she said. "It's about making sure that the person you're seeing has privacy, and that the person you're not seeing has privacy."

Uber in Boston is trying to take advantage of the disruptive potential of Uber's self-driving vehicles. The ride-hailing company on Wednesday announced its plans to use its robots in Boston and other cities as part of a trial of the autonomous vehicles, including Uber's own, with U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). It marks the first time that an automaker is trying to use "driverless vehicles" in the United States.

Uber rates in Boston are higher than New York's because two groups of drivers -- independent contractors and uberX drivers -- often work at different rates. Boston is the most expensive city to drive for Uber in, according to Garett Cabrillo of Wait$Waze. In Manhattan, you can drive for the taxi industry at about $16 an hour. Uber CEO Travis Kalanick earlier this year said that if Uber could do it all over again, it would run on a hybrid model. The company uses cars for pickups, instead of cars for pickups and dropoffs, and drivers for the services operate in a separate fleet, not participating in its rideshare program.
