Taxi prices in Detroit are the highest in the nation, and Rideshare companies such as Lyft and Sidecar are rare. Meanwhile, the city has tried to shrink its taxi fleet from 750 to 524, the majority of them in Detroit. Most of them are old, cost-efficient cars that compete with Uber.

Uber rates in Detroit? Easy to get on and get around. Different rates for different areas of Detroit. I wish. I wish we did it in the past. In the past there would be 50 to 100 people with a car in the community. Now it's like 12 to 15 cars per person, maybe less than 15 per person. We thought there would be fewer cars. If you go around our neighborhood, there's like 4 to 8 cars per person.

Taxi prices in Detroit. While commuters may struggle to come to terms with that higher cost, there is good news for Uber users: The service is coming to the area. Uber has expanded its presence in Detroit. Uber and Lyft were already operating in Detroit. They both had pilots in the metro area and were part of Detroit City Council for a while. Now that both companies are full scale, Uber will be moving its fleet from the city's industrial area and will be making its first car stops within city limits. Taxi prices in Detroit have hovered in the $15-20 range for years. I would happily take 15-20 miles to get to my destination.

Uber rates in Detroit are 30% higher than in cities with similarly sized populations and are 3 times higher in rural areas than their urban counterparts. While the ones with the right number of promotions (usually 25) can command double that amount and still keep it quite reasonably priced, that's not how it is in Detroit. And the cost is changing day to day. The recession and rising costs have significantly increased the need for people to use public transportation. The city has fewer public transit routes and car sharing options. Elevated rates may save money for Detroit and increase Detroit's revenue base. But high taxes create disincentives for people to use a public transit option.
