Uber rates in Kansas City are high — a ride from the Central West End to Westport would cost about $20, which is more than twice as much as it costs in Minneapolis. But it is just one place. We're not saying that it is Uber's destination. Uber's costs are just a fraction of what traditional cab companies charge for a ride, and even they are climbing as more and more people use apps to book rides.

Taxi prices in Kansas City vary. Most taxi drivers in the city do not offer a lift. For taxis in the local area, the price is about $2-3 in the lower level. When you see a driver negotiate the price at the meter, you can get the price. You will most likely get a ride within an hour. Many times a taxi will go to the next exit or stoplight before the fare is determined. This is a great way to save money, since it often costs about 10-15 dollars for the ride.

Taxi prices in Kansas City have jumped steadily in recent years — often undercutting the city's cheaper transportation options, especially during the fall and winter months. And the city has taken the unusual step of levying additional fees on customers who are behind in paying the credit. The taxi price hike is just the latest in a string of spikes by local governments that are trying to crack down on ride-sharing apps that turn ordinary drivers into entrepreneurs. According to the Associated Press, three dozen municipalities in 13 states are now adopting some sort of ordinance to limit the hours taxi drivers can work.

Uber rates in Kansas City have gone up 27 percent in the past year, according to TripAdvisor, which has extensive car service listings. By the time taxis arrive at the front door, waiting to pick up any of their regulars, the driver can make a quick decision: "Should I charge full price to the customer and be only known as the driver or should I be more selective and pay full price for the higher transaction and be known only as the person leaving the cab?" Yet those are just two examples of business decisions by cabdrivers based solely on the money. In the first year of Uber's service in Kansas City, the company took on about 6,700 drivers who were already on the road.
