Is Uber available anytime day or night?

Uber rates in Long Beach — which, to be fair, doesn't have the worst commute in the nation — hits a pedestrian crossing. A recent study from the Transportation Sustainability Research Center at UC Berkeley examined 30 international markets and found that Americans spend 13% of their income to travel to work by taxi. In New York City, they spend 6% of their income. In Long Beach, they spend more than double that amount. Fewer vehicles, more people—that's the theory behind Uber.

Taxi prices in Long Beach are about the same as in San Francisco; not bad for a community where you can easily rent a second-hand SUV for the $1,000-plus it can fetch online. Taxi prices in Long Beach will increase five percent during all peak hours, which are from 2:30 p.m. to 10 p.m., and remain unchanged for all off-peak hours. Taxis from West Hollywood are $6.50 an hour. Taxis in downtown Long Beach run $4.50 and can be booked at advance reservations. Overnight, mid-week or weekend trips to Long Beach are $40. These are exceptions to the norm as your cost is based on what you can afford.

Taxi prices in Long Beach have risen considerably. There is a couple of reasons for that as I know. The passenger-tire cars currently in use by drivers are expensive, and they're not always available. Even so, the cars themselves make a compelling argument for a taxi service. They provide reliable, affordable transportation to find a job, to the airport and to friends and family, and to address the many practical dilemmas that have curtailed the ability of citizens to commute by car. Sharing the roadway with 40,000 vehicles adds up to a great deal of noise pollution. Which is also a big priblem on its own.

Uber rates in Long Beach County have increased every year since 2014, making it more expensive to ride for the most frequent passengers. The majority of riders who bike to the music festival are young professionals, professional artists, tech workers, tourists and faculty at schools, the Long Beach Bicycle Coalition estimates. At the same time, the city's bicycle-share program has seen a declining number of users, and a reduction in ridership from taxis is likely to result in no increase in private buses for people who are required to pay for a taxi service. As far as Lyft is concerned, only they may be legal.
