Taxi prices in Melbourne are among the highest in the world and it is not possible to find a quality, reliable taxi in Melbourne without taking an Uber or a hire-a-cab journey. Services in Melbourne that facilitate buying and selling have also exploded in popularity. For example, renting a trailer to take fruit to a friend's house or letting someone else to pick up supplies from your store have replaced the days of buying an item for the convenience of the person you're buying it from.

Melbourne is a city with a high number of car sharing companies and with service levels varying from being as poor as in Europe and other cities to very good in places like Preston. To give an idea, Melbourne is home to over 20 car sharing companies, with 41% of all the car sharing trips being taken by car sharing in the city. But the national average is just 19%.

Uber rates in Melbourne to be doubled, which hurts Uber, but not Apple drivers. Uber drivers will be given a more generous taxi rate in Melbourne, which is going to be doubled to help the struggling app-based service. But Apple Uber drivers are upset that their rates will be capped, instead of having the rate per journey increased by an average of 10 per cent. Uber has just announced that fares will be halved, from $1500 to $1200, for their riders in Melbourne. Uber Gold and Platinum cars are even cheaper with a rate of $1.25 and $1.45. Uber Go and Uber Pool (one ride only) will be available to residents at no additional charge.

Taxi prices in Melbourne have risen 15% in the past five years, while a year ago they were falling. Taxi drivers aren't as happy to pay more, and reports in this year's edition of The Weekend Herald suggest many of the new, taxi-buddied "fangirls" are joining forces to try to drive the cost of trips in the city higher. Among the city's rides that are currently the highest are Uber and uberX, which are available up to $US30 ($32) a ride while the city's standard taxis are about $2 ($3.45) more expensive. The surge in prices has prompted taxi drivers to allege Uber has overcharged them for the privilege of using the app. Uber is offering a reward for drivers who take on a hit by including in their reviews a clear statement of the price hike.
