A taxi driver who claimed he saw a man with a gun at the Uber office in Nairobi has given DNA evidence to the police, but no suspect has been arrested.


Uber drivers in Kenya are facing stiff penalties for taking passengers, and some have gone into hiding because of the crackdown by the authorities.

Uber has already lost a number of Kenyan drivers in recent weeks, and has suspended the account of one who was caught with a gun, in one of the city's busiest business districts.

The taxi driver who had allegedly seen the man with a gun said: 'I'm in a taxi. There was a guy with a gun. I could see the gun.'

Police have been seen patrolling Nairobi's Kibera slum in the past week, with officers in plain clothes.

Taxi rides in Nairobi can now be booked using a mobile app from the US and from the rest of the world and can be booked online and from any taxi driver. As a ride from Simeulis to the hospital went for R10 a couple of weeks ago, i clicked on the Uber app, spoke to a user, "do you have an Open Car?" and he told me it was R8 a couple of hours later. This is a shame because I believe that the Uber system allows your home address to be discovered.
