Uber: "The last time a major U.S. automaker introduced a self-driving car, it cost the company as much as $1 billion. That may not be an outlandish figure to start, but that price tag was just the beginning."
The self-driving car companies, of course, would have to be able to make money in this space on both sides, as the taxi companies will be forced to change their services and drivers to accommodate this technology.
Uber: "In addition to the $1 billion price tag, the car company had to buy the patents, which are now worth nearly $2 billion."
Uber has had the patent on self-driving cars since 2008. And as far as I know, Uber has not had to pay up for the rights to its intellectual property. So while the patent is not a huge deal, they would have to spend money on licenses, etc.

A new Uber app, available at the moment only in Newark and Newark Liberty airports, lets you book a New Jersey taxi as soon as you land. The service is accessible via the phone's map and can take you to your destination within 10-15 minutes. It's available only on Uber's smartphone app, though other carrier-based services could make it available in the future. At Newark Liberty, you'll need a credit card. The app is available in all markets, although the cheapest ride there is $8.25 for up to two people.

Uber in Newark is the largest taxi company in the U.S. with 24,000 taxis and more than 280 licensed drivers. "We have done a lot of research and taken a lot of advice and the advice we've been getting is that if there is a way to increase our market share, to expand service and to be a more viable business model, then yes, that's something we should be looking at," said an Uber spokeswoman.

Taxi prices in Newark and Manhasset doubled between October and December of this year to more than $40.5 million a year, up 15 percent from the 5 years ago, up from $40.4 million. Drivers are paying double the usual fare. At $28.29, New Jersey's taxi rates are the highest in the country. Those who continue to drive, even if it can't bring them out of their poverty, are making themselves dependent on this inane industry that generates $120 billion in annual revenue. I don't drive because I can't afford it. I drive to survive, and that's fine. And then there is the phrase, "just try to quit." It's never a good idea though.

Uber rates in Newark and with Union Street Station, must change. On-demand rides are considerably cheaper than Uber's standard rates, but they're not quite as decent as what you'll get when paying a cab, even if it's a professional-looking vehicle. The fare is likelier to be cash than credit, and there's no 24-hour guarantee of a ride. Like many phone apps, you have to request to set up a ride through the app or you'll be charged for it. When you walk up to a cab that's waiting to pick you up, it's the haves and the have nots of the transit system. The hope is that the difference in price will persuade someone who already rides the bus to give the ride a go.
