I was in a rush to get there so we called Uber and asked about prices. The person said, "Oh, you can do a ride and it'll cost $2.50 plus tip." I asked him what does that mean. He just laughed and said, "They'll just put a $2.50 surcharge on your tab." We tried it, he gave me a $20 tip and I felt ripped off. The person was so cheap and so rude.

Came across this guy and was shocked. He was clearly a homeless man trying to make some extra money. Got in a cab and it took 15 min. When I got home the guy who took the cab told me to call them back and let them know I'd given them a tip. He then took me to the front desk, but the front desk woman would not take my phone number, so I got her to call my phone number.

Taxi in Philadelphia takes his share of the glory as the father of taxi technology, but just as much credit for conquering cabdriver whining. The romance of swooning taxis is romantic, but it was not created by Benjamin's video for "May the Taxi Ride Be with You," "a sexy, wistful, heartfelt tribute to taxi drivers all over the world." It may have only been half-joking, or it might have been the purest manifestation of their mutual love and compassion.

The problems Uber has had in cities like Philly and Washington, D.C., while coming under fire from taxi drivers, have caused Uber to backtrack on its commitment to paying for the city's pink-taxi CTA to upgrade the T. Uber's CTA pilot program in Philly has proven so successful that the company said it is building out a second pilot at Roosevelt and Market to start adding cabs to the lineup.

Uber rates in Philadelphia are up more than 55 percent since last year as a result of five new ridesharing companies including UberX and UberBlack, which are required to provide such services. And in Philadelphia's downtown core, Uber has relied on cars and bikes in increasing numbers. But last month, after receiving complaints that it was refusing to respond to disabled passengers with tickets, Uber said it would increase the number of wheelchair-accessible cars. That prompted local nonprofit the Allied Allied Hospitality to put pressure on Uber to use its connections to provide wheelchair-accessible vehicles.

Taxi prices in Philadelphia have increased by 5.9 percent during the last ten years and all passengers are required to carry a minimum of $20. The price increase also was unveiled last week and is an agreement among the cities, the county, the ride-hailing service Lyft and the taxi industry. It only covers the price of the cab ride. It does not include the taxes or charges of a standard taxi, which is illegal to legally operate in Philadelphia. The new regulations don't affect the three drivers who currently drive for the city's fleet of cabs. Even though the city has seen plenty of growth, those increases represent a fraction of the 19 percent increase in driving for workers to get to work over the same period.

Uber in Philadelphia, PA

It looks like the pricing structure you know well from all the miles you have logged in Philadelphia, PA cabs. But Uber Fare Estimator actually uses a bit different pricing model.
