Taxi prices in Salt Lake City were among the most expensive in the country. The average fare for a 15-minute ride was $10.65, more than 20 percent higher than the national average and seven percent above the Los Angeles area average. Besides these numbers, two metropolitan areas outside of Salt Lake City recorded their lowest sales tax rates in more than 30 years, the study found.

Does Uber and Lyft work in Salt Lake City? In our typical ride (and taxi fare), a driver on average makes $1.50 to $2.00 more than a regular cab ride, or $1.05 to $2.20 less if you're not driving with a rider. UberX and Lyft (which use UberX and Lyft's service) have the most cost advantages. Drivers on average earn about $2.00 more. Uber rates in Salt Lake City continue to skyrocket. Drivers in Utah often call the city home and have found itself, for better or worse, in a supply-and-demand free-for-all market. This situation has made it difficult for Uber drivers to stay in business, leading to a higher turnover rate than in similar markets, according to one Uber driver who spoke with Business Insider.

Taxi prices in Salt Lake City are shockingly low for downtown Chicago and Houston and are often prohibitively expensive in other cities. Taxi rates in the city center (especially in South Park and downtown) in general are unnecessarily high, and have a bitter road trip in their rules and regulations. Use caution and ask for a ride if the driver offers. Most drivers in Salt Lake City will only take your vehicle if you use their services and then call the number that appears on your ID. Taxi-hailing apps like Uber and Lyft can save big by providing a customer-service face-to-face between driver and passenger that made many industries more efficient.
