Taxi prices in Syracuse may have dropped as a result of Uber and Lyft, but many remain high. In Syracuse and the surrounding areas, on a good day, it's possible to negotiate a 3-way rate with a cab driver for roughly $30, which is well above the average cab fare. UberX has exploded in popularity in cities around the country. Over the last year, it has provided up to 1,000 rides per second for a cost of about 2.4¢ per mile. But UberX is not yet in a position to do for city dwellers. The price of an Uber or Lyft cab in Syracuse was up 5.4 percent from last year. But both drivers and passengers said they feel the changes have gone too far.

Uber rates in Syracuse's taxi industry — and the ones they charge their drivers — shouldn't surprise us. Indeed, Syracuse's taxi rates are virtually identical to New York City's. In November 2009, just after Uber brought taxi rates back down to their more sustainable levels, many local taxi and limousine companies called it a fait accompli. Last year, Uber had about 150 drivers on the road, compared to about 400 New York City taxis. Traffic on major roads can be very heavy at peak times. If you're hailing an Uber with a ride destination of three to five minutes, expect a rush to come your way. The city has a special cabs program, the HATCH program, in which taxis are available by the hour from any convenient parking lot or city-owned building.
