Uber rates in West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale now have to have a valid parking permit. The CTA says West Palm Beach drivers get 20 percent off at the city's shuttle service and add 20 cents for a short ride. Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach are looking into creating a similar program. And after some complaints about Uber's black cars in West Palm Beach, the CTA will offer discounts on meter rides to drivers that prove they have the required permit. The plan is to allow 20 percent discount for drivers with no proof of one, Uber said. Uber rates in West Palm Beach are low, which is good for drivers. But when you get all the overhead costs, if it's only a dollar or two a trip, the driver can't really make much, says Tandi Woodhouse, the PBA's driver union steward.

Taxi prices in West Palm Beach have grown about 4 percent since last year and will have increased further over the next four years to nearly $4 a trip by 2020. The company estimates that the most used bus route will change three times over the next decade and no other mode of travel will have significant growth during that time. A study conducted by the Bay Area Transportation Alliance in 2011 showed that a passenger can expect to pay $3.78 to $3.99 for a trip on an average private vehicle trip in the city of West Palm Beach. Uber plans to have 17,000 drivers in West Palm Beach by the end of the year, and the city has contracted with Honeycar, a self-driving car startup, to supply the vehicles. The ride-hailing giant has been instrumental in convincing local policymakers to enact rules that will facilitate the growth of its fleet.
